Course Details
This course introduces pharmacy students to the foundational principles of organic chemistry. It covers chemical bonding, stereochemistry, and the reactivity of basic functional groups (like alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes), laying the critical groundwork for drug discovery and advanced pharmaceutical studies.
Course Requirements
Basic General Chemistry: A foundational understanding of general chemistry concepts (e.g., atomic structure, electronegativity, hybridization, and chemical bonding).
High School Chemistry: Familiarity with standard high school-level chemistry principles.
No Prior Organic Chemistry Experience Needed: This is a Level 1 course; we will start from the fundamental basics of organic chemistry.
Tools for Practice: A dedicated notebook and pen. Organic chemistry requires hands-on practice for drawing chemical structures, stereochemistry, and reaction mechanisms.
Mindset: Willingness to practice and understand concepts logically rather than just memorizing them.
Course Content
What you'll learn ?
Aliphatic Hydrocarbons Foundations: Master the structure, IUPAC nomenclature, and physical properties of Alkanes, Alkenes, and Alkynes.
Synthesis & Reactivity: Understand the preparation methods and characteristic chemical reactions of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons.
Nucleophilic Substitution Reactions: Comprehend the step-by-step mechanisms of Unimolecular (SN1) and Bimolecular (SN2) substitution reactions.
Kinetics & Stereochemistry: Analyze the differences between SN1 and SN2 pathways, including reaction rates, carbocation stability, and stereochemical outcomes (inversion vs. racemization).
Predicting Reaction Outcomes: Learn how to evaluate substrates, nucleophiles, leaving groups, and solvents to accurately predict the major product of a reaction.
