INTRODUCTION TO LIE ALGEBRAS

INTRODUCTION TO LIE ALGEBRAS

Instructor: Prof. Dr. Moustafa Mehanna

This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and mathematical structures of finite-dimensional Lie algebras, with a focus on Lie algebras over the complex numbers.

The course begins with the definitions of algebras, associative and abelian algebras, and Lie algebras. Students will study the Lie bracket operation and its essential properties, including bilinearity, skew-symmetry, and the Jacobi identity.

The course then explores Lie subalgebras, ideals, centers, centralizers, and normalizers, providing mathematical definitions, proofs, and exercises to explain their structural relationships.

Students will also examine important examples of matrix Lie algebras, including general linear, special linear, upper triangular, diagonal, orthogonal, and special unitary Lie algebras.

Course Topics:

  • Fundamental definitions and concepts of Lie algebras.
  • Lie brackets and the Jacobi identity.
  • Associative, abelian, and non-abelian algebras.
  • Lie subalgebras and their properties.
  • Centers, centralizers, and normalizers.
  • Ideals and their relationships with Lie subalgebras.
  • General and special linear Lie algebras.
  • Triangular and diagonal matrix Lie algebras.
  • Orthogonal and special unitary Lie algebras.
  • Mathematical examples, proofs, and exercises.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the covered material, students will be able to understand the defining properties of Lie algebras, analyze Lie brackets, identify subalgebras and ideals, and examine important matrix Lie algebras using mathematical reasoning and proofs.
