Course Details
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and mechanisms of organic chemistry. It begins with the study of organic structures, molecular representation, and the systematic naming of organic compounds. Students then explore atomic emission spectra, orbital configuration, and hybridization as foundations for understanding molecular bonding and reactivity. The course develops a mechanistic understanding of major organic reactions, including nucleophilic addition and substitution reactions at carbonyl compounds, nucleophilic substitution at saturated carbon, electrophilic addition to alkenes, conjugate addition, nucleophilic aromatic substitution, and elimination reactions. Emphasis is placed on recognizing functional groups, predicting reaction pathways, understanding electron movement, and relating molecular structure to chemical reactivity.By the end of the course, students will be able to interpret organic structures, apply nomenclature rules, explain bonding and hybridization, identify major reaction types, and analyze reaction mechanisms using fundamental organic chemistry principles.
Course Requirements
Students should have a basic background in general chemistry, especially atomic structure, chemical bonding, electron configuration, and simple molecular formulas.
Recommended course requirements include:
